Straw Bale Building - We will be raising a one storey load-bearing
straw bale building on a rammed earth tyre foundation for the Tipi
West campsite. Participants are welcome to camp in one of the tipis
for 10 GBP a night. Make it a holiday, bring the family and stay over

Straw Bale Tons in Portugal - The tons are prototypes for low-cost
buildings, self-building, ecological construction, recycling of
raw material (e.g. plastic bottles for floor insulation), using
regional raw material and much more. During the three-week course,
the load bearing straw bale tons will be erected on foundations
that are already installed. The course includes : theoretical and
practical training in wood construction (formwork for the tons and
window frames), straw bale use, building of natural stone floors,
loam plastering, mounting walls with hoses for light loam and installation
of a green roof. |

The course will include a chance to begin the repair of an existing load-bearing building, and the opportunity to mix and apply lime render. At
the end of the course you should be able to: Recognise the two major
types of straw bale building used in the UK; Understand the practical
issues relating to load-bearing straw bale building; understand
thermal performance, moisture ingress, rodent attack and fire resistance;
identify further sources of information, volunteering and training
