During October 2007 naturalhomes.org asked the question "If I were to invest in an eco-house I would buy a..." with a choice of natural building construction types to select from. The graph below shows the distribution of the World's vote showing straw bale construction is the World's preference for investing in an eco-house.

Results from around the World

Votes in the Americas and Europe came from the following countries. In the Americas: USA, Canada and Venezuela and in Europe: UK, Spain, Denmark, Holland, Belgium, Norway, France, Czech, Finland, Poland and Germany. There were too few votes from Austrilasia, Africa and the Middle East & Asia to present meaningful statistics for those regions. The votes from Europe and the Americas are shown below.

Results for the Americas and Europe

The results for investment preference have been combined with the results from the survey for building preference to identify any change in attitude between the willingness to build and the willingness to invest in a particular eco-house construction type. The construction types cob, adobe, earthbag and rammed earth have been grouped together as the single category 'earthen' structures.

Results from the Americas comparing the willingness to build against the
willingness to invest in the different eco-house construction types

The Americas prefer to invest in 'earthen' structures, including earthship which is predominantly 'earthen', with a marginally greater percentage of people willing to invest in 'earthen' structures than the percentage of people who were willing to build using 'earthen' techniques. In the Americas there is a significant reluctance to invest in straw bale structures compared to the percentage willing to build with straw bale. If you are considering building a straw bale home in the Americas the impact of this may be a factor to consider in the re-sale potential of your home.

Results from Europe comparing the willingness to build against the
willingness to invest in the different eco-house construction types

Overall Europeans prefer to invest in straw bale structures but with noticeably fewer people willing to invest in straw bale structures than build them. If you are considering building a straw bale home in Europe the impact of this may be a factor to consider in the re-sale potential of the home. However despite the lower numbers willing to buy than build, straw bale homes in Europe are the most sought after eco-house type.
