The traditional midmakh (adobe brick) homes of Najran, Saudi Arabia.

These are traditional midmakh (adobe brick) homes in Najran, Saudi Arabia. Their design is very distinctive reflecting the influence of Yemen nearby. The buildings are over several storeys high. The ground floor is for livestock, the next for the family, with small windows to keep out intruders and the heat and as you go up the building, the windows get larger to let in more light and air.

Often the houses are clustered together around a central courtyard so that members of the same family can live together. Many of these buildings are several hundred years old and happily there is considerable interest by Najran residents to preserve their traditional homes.
